Overview
Bay is a strategic digital ecosystem and native Android mobile application designed to empower smallholder farmers in Cambodia. By delivering technology-driven solutions, the platform aims to modernize the agricultural industry, boost national food security, and bridge the digital divide for rural communities.
Objective
The primary objective was to develop a scalable Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to solve real-world challenges faced by Cambodian farmers, such as low productivity, unpredictable weather, and middleman pricing. Key goals included improving farming skills, increasing income through direct market access, delivering crucial climate alerts, and fostering a connected community of farmers and agricultural experts.
Process
The project followed a structured 12-week lifecycle, starting with deep UI/UX design in Figma before moving into development. The app was built using Android Studio (Java) for the frontend, with Firebase handling the backend database and real-time services. I worked on implementing core features like a marketplace linkage, real-time chat, weather alerts, and a complex Farm Map with geo-tagging, successfully overcoming technical hurdles related to Map API integration and complex logic design.
Impact
Bay stands as a robust proof-of-concept that demonstrates how technology can directly enhance agricultural productivity and income. By successfully laying this foundation, the platform is now highly scalable and ready for future integrations, such as AI-driven farming recommendations and IoT soil sensors, actively contributing to a more sustainable and secure food system in Cambodia.
